HAWERA’S SOCCER WIN

CHINESE CUP MATCH. STRATFORD TEAM DEFEATED.

The Hawera Soccer Club signalled its re-entrance into match play after a recess of some years by defeating Stratford by two goals to nd at King Edward Park, Hawer/i, yesterday. The match was played for the Chinese challenge cup, whicji lias been held bv Stratford for several years. As the majority of the Hawera team were playing their first- match in about four srears,5 r ears, their success in gaining the cup was particularly meritorious.

The teams were: _ Hawera: Longsfaff; Stewart, Reece; Cockerill, Starling, Smith; James, Barker, Fraser, Ogden. Stratford: Miller; Henderson, Jones; Johns, Campbell, Arbqckle; Clements, Jackson, Blythe, Gibbs. Inaccurate shooting nullified the advantage that Hawera enjoyed in the first spell. One goal was shot by Barker but manv other golden opportunities went by the board through inaccuracy. , ~ Hawera showed good defence m the second spell, in which Stratford were the better team. The Hawera forwards, like Stratford’s, lacked combination, and the shooting was again wild, Fraser scored a lucky goal towards the end. On the Hawera side, Starling, an ex-Wolverhampton Rovers player, at centre-half was outstanding, and, though needing a run, lie showed clever ball control. On the Stratford -side, Miller, the goalie, a cool-headed player, gave a fine display and saved well many times. Mr L. Newman was referee.
