Easter Bowling Tourney

Hawera Rinks Eliminated in Semi=Final Games PLAY CONTINUED TO=DAY

Despite heavy rain overnight which softened the green and further showers this. morning the South Taranaki Easter Bowling tournament was continued to-day in its semi-final stages at the Park green and the final was commenced this afternoon. Both the Havvera rinks were eliminated in the semifinals, and the final is being contested by Spurdle (Inglewood) and Douglass (West End). In one semi-final Douglass (West End) defeated Bull (Hawera) 23—20. The match was very even all through and it was not until the 21st head that a decision was reached. The score at the loth head was 13—13. Douglass then took a three at the next head, Bull retaliating with a two, followed by a one, which made the game 16-all with three heads to play. Pour drawn shots went to Douglass on the 19th head, but Bull regained them on the 20th, the score again being level, 20 points each. Hobbs threw a fairly long head for the 21st, but was narrow and short with his first and well over the head with liis second. Both Duffin’s bowls were two yards over the head, and it remained to Thomas (Douglass No. 2) to draw two shots, one a foot short of “kitty.” Winks was unable to make any alteration, and Bull left the head two dow r n. His first shot was too strong and Douglass added a third shot. It was *then left to Bull to draw the shot, but the heavy green made him too careful and he was too short, leaving the West End skip three up and game, 23 —20. Spurdle (Inglewood) deefated A. C. Smith (Park) 23 —16 in the other semifinal. At the 15th head there was only one point difference, Spurdle leading 16—15. The Inglewood rink then scored two singles and a three on the next three heads to lead 21—15. At the 19th head Smith scored one, after kitty had accidentally been trailed by Thomas, his No. 3. The 20lh head was very interesting, and decided the game for Spurdle. With his last shot Smith tested Spurdlc’s shqt through to lie five up, which would have made the board 21-all with one head to play. It was not to be, however, for Spurdle, with his last bowl drew the shot, leaving Smith to obtain six to tie or seven to win on the last head. Inglewood was too consistent and scored a single to win the game 23—-16. Playing in the final Douglass was leading 12—4 at the end of the ninth head. Three heads were burned, including two in succession.
