HAWERA TROTS

HAM EVENT TO MOCAST Impromptu Again Beats Harold Logan by Nose NATIVE COLE SURPRISES FLEET ARROW’S DIVIDEND

There was again a large attendance at the second day of the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. The weather -was fine, although the sky was overcast. Owners responded well to the handicap and the fields were excellent. The track, after the showers during the week-end,; was more holding than, it was on the first day, but was, nevertheless, in first-class order.

The finishes in the earilier races were exceptionally close, and in some instancesfour or five torses crossed the line almost simultaneously, making the task of the judge a most difficult one.

In the special challenge ’match race, Impromptu again defeated Harold Logan, the margin being only a nose after a splendid contest which clipped four-fifths of a second off the time registered on Saturday. There is every indication that the '‘tote figures will show an increase on the same day last year. The main event of the day, the Waimate Plains Handicap, was won by Mocast, a firm favourite on each machine, with Sylvia Sydney second and Aristotle third. Fleet Arrow, winner of the Oiiawe Handicap, returned a dividend of nearly two score, while Native Cole paid a good price in the Patea Handicap. Detailed results are:

(Winner trained by Owner, Belfast.) Tecla, Plutus and Native Cole were scratched in the Trial Handicap, and ten starters participated in the event. The choice of the public fell on Casino and Pukeuri, but the latter broke badly at the start and was well behind for nearly all the race. Ideal was the first to show out, followed by Llewellyn’s Pet and Marina, but when the field entered the straight for the first time Juggler ran into second place, with Llewellyn’s Pet, -St. Hal, Marina and Casino following in that order. Passing the stand Juggler was in the lead with Ideal and Llewellyn’s Pet three lengths clear of Marina, Basina, Pauline Dillon, WTackless and Pukeuri in that order. There was no material change when the field straightened up at the back stretch, although Wrackless endeavoured to improve his position. Half'a > mile from home the field closed up, and into the straight the order was Juggler, Ideal, St. Hal, Wrackless, Llewellyn’s Pet and Casino, with Pukeuri coming fast along the outside. Casino finished on best to win from Llewellyn’s Pet by half a length with Ideal close up in third place. Juggler, St. Hal and Pukeuri were next to finish in that order.

(Winner trained by J. Shaw, Ashhurst.)

A rank outsider in Fleet Arrow came to light in the Ohawe Handicap to return a dividend of nearly two score. The winner carried only eight £1 tickets on the W’in machine, and only twice that number on the place machine. Arapai was the first to show out from Native Princess, Header, Mabel Chimes, Bronte and Modern Lady in that order. Aerial Boy broke badly and dropped back to last. Passing the stand the first time Native Princess was in front from Bronte, Modern Lady, Mabel Chimes and Arapai. Going into the back Bronte ran to the front, with Modern Lady stiid Mabel Chimes in close attendance, with Heather galloping. At the half mile the field was well strung out with Modern Lady in charge from Mabel Chimes, Fleet Arrow, Bronte and Header, with a gap to the rest of the field. Modern

Lady was the first into the straight, the order behind her being Fleet Arrow, Bronte, Mabel Chimes and Header. Fleet Arrow came with a phenomenal burst of s,peed down the home stretch and won by half a length from Modern Lady, with a .gap of three lengths to Bronte. Electric Bell was the only defection from the Kaponga Handicap, which proved to bo a good betting race. Public opinion was solid for the Donald bracket, with five of the others evenly supported. Iron Man was badly left through breaking and ran last all the way. Vest Bay, Insolvent, Le Chenault, and'Supertax were the first leaders, the order into the straight the first time being Le Chenault, Insolvent, Vesta Bay, Supertax, Orlcigh Mills, Harvest In, Bolinda King and Blondie. This was the order passing the stand and also entering the back stretch. When the field straightened up along the back there was little change, except that Bolinda King moved up and Vesta Bay dropped back slightly. Half a mile from home Le Chenault was still in front, and he led into the straight from Supertax, Insolvent, Bolinda King, Harvest In, Orleigh Mills and Blondie. The last-named put in a strong run from the turn, but could not catch the leaders. Insolvent won by a length and a half from Supertax, who was three lengths to the good from Le Chenault. Next in order to finish were Bolinda King,. Blondie, Harvest In and Orleigh Mills.

CHALLENGE MATCH BACE. One mile. IMPROMPTU: Mr Cros. Moran’s b.g., by Pedro Pronto —Petrova (Owner) 1 HAROLD LOGAN: Mr E, F. C. Hinds’ b.g.,. aged, by Logan Pointer Thomas) 2

Won by a nose. Time, 2.9. Impromptu again won the match race with Harold Logan, but on this occasion it was a near thing, a nose separating the pair at the finish. It was near enough to a dead-heat, which would have been a fitting finish to a series of half -a dozen match races. Harold Logan went away well from the barrier, and had a lead .of a couple of lengths from Impromptu on the turn. The first quarter was left behind in 33 3-ssec. At the half mile the pair were almost together, the time' taken being 1.51. They raced neck and neck to the turn for home, wnere Harold Logan appeared to have a slight- advantage. Down the straight there was a great battle, and although many thought the finish was a dead-heat, Impromptu got the verdict by a nose. Mr Moran, the owner of Impromptu, was presented with a cup donated by Mr J. L. Bennett, Palmerston North, by Miss Edna Washer, daughter of the vice-presi-dent of the club, Mr E. A. Washer. In returning thanks, Mr Moran paid a tribute to the caretaker, Mr A. Morse, on the condition of the track.

C. S. Donald, the Belfast ownertrainer, registered his third win of the day when he won the Waimate Plains Handicap with Moeast. Nelson’s Chum got away best and headed Sylvia Sydney, Pronto Bingen, Moeast, Aristotle, Harold Denver and Plain Pearl in that order. There was .practically no change in the order during the first Tound, but passing the stand the field had drawn closer together. The first mile took 2.26 3-5. Going out of the straight Nelson’s Chum was still in front, with Aristotle in second place, followed by Sylvia Sydney, Harold Denver, Pronto Bingen, Moeast and Plain Pearl. This order was maintained when the field entered the back stretch. With half a mile to go Nelson’s Chum and Aristotle were together a length clear of Sylvia Sydney and Harold Denver, with Moeast and Plain Pearl paired off last. The last-named started after the field

at the turn, the order into the straight being Aristotle, Pronto’ Bingen, Plain Pearl, and Moeast with Sylvia Sydney, Nelson’s Chum and Harold Denver together last.
