After two qualifying rounds of the annual Taranaki golf championship tournament conducted at Waiwakaiho on Saturday by the New Plymouth Golf Club A. E. Conway (New Plymouth), F. E., Quin (New Plymouth) and D>. V. Sutherland (Inglewood) led the field. Their totals of 150 were three strokes better than that of the next man, H. P. Dale (Eltham). In a play-off to decide positions yesterday Sutherland returned 80, Qum 82 and Conway S 3. A field of 118 left the first tcc, tins being lour fewer than last yeai s. Seven of .the players are handicapped on two or less and 2 L arc on six oi less. The field includes competitors from Auckland, Wellington, Wanganui and most Taranaki clubs. TJie drying greens caught many in the second qualifying round and almost caused the downfall, of several of the leading players. After returning a gross 76 in the morning B. V. Haworth found the greens too much f or Rim in the afternoon and he could not do better than 87. From the third onwards he required three putts on almost every green. F. E. Quin was the only player to beat 80 in the afternoon, his card of 79 being an improvement of one on the morning round. Four players returned even 80’s. The three leaders on the qualifying list have all held Taranaki titles. Com way and Quin are past Taranaki amateur champions, "while D. V. Sutherland, the youthful Inglewood player, is the reigning Taranaki champion of champions. The present holder of the Taranaki amateur title, G. M. Chong, could not do better than tie for ninth place with 84—81—165. He was one who was caught by the fast greens early in the afternoon and after eight holes ho was still even fives. He took a three at the ninth, however, and returned well in 3S. _ Rain fell throughout the piay-off for the gross aggregate trophy, and Sutherland was always a shade better than his opponents. At the turn Sutherland was 40, and his opponents 41 each. After the 17th Sutherland was 75, Conway 76 and Quin 77. Sutherland was handy with his approach at the 18th, but the others were not so good. From a long putt Conway missed his chance of squaiing the game, missing & short second putt, the others taking two each.
