Dominion-wide Meetings Open in Fine Weather

TROTS POPULAR AT HAWERA LARGE CROWD, GOOD FIELDS

:,rTHE Easter racing carnival opened on Saturday, meetings 1 being held in all parts of the Dominion. Fine weather prevailed in every case, and all clubs, both racing and trotting, reported large attendances and in many cases increased i cturns from the totalisator. The principal event on 'the racing calendar at this season of the year, the Easter Handicap at Ellcrslic, Avas Avon by Red Manfred, who put up a new course record in so doing. The, Great Northern Champagne . Stakes at the same meeting was Avon by Du Barry. At Feilding the main event, the SianChester Handicap, was Avon by Pladie, Avhile Tim Tiger Avon the other “leg” of the double. In the South Island, the Riverton Cup Avas 'won by {he little-fancied First Song, Avhile another comparative outsider in Water PoAver Avon the Aparinja .Handicap, the open “six” at the same meeting. At HaAvera the public was catered for by the annual meeting of the Hawera Trotting Club, which opened in ideal weather conditions. There Avcrc large fields in all the events, and fuv*'ourites'generally had a good day. The Ncav Zealand Metio:’politan'Trotting Club’s Easter meeting also opened at Christchurch, when the main event, the Easter Handicap, Avas Avon by Wild Guy and Sunny Morn, Avlio dead-heated for first place.
