EXTRACTS FROM “HAWERA STAR”
APRIL 22, 1885
At the R. M. Court to-day Peter Adamson pleaded guilty to an information charging him with a breach of the Police Offences Act in loading a cart with bread in a public street on a Sunclay. The excuse he gave was that he had received an order from Maoris who wanted food, and he thought it rather hard that -he should get into trouble for supplying people with the necessaries of life. The Alayor, who was on the bench, read the law to defendant and fined him one shilling with costs, cautioning him against offending in future.
Mr Willis informs the “Wanganui Herald” that he is about to start a new industry in. the way of manufacturing playing cards. • The material is all to hand, and lie expects, within a few weeks to be "able to place some 30,000 packs of cards on the market. *****
It is proposed to form a companj r in Wellington, with a capital of £20,000, to erect a Grand Hotel.
A considerable number of natives, under the leadership of Titolcowaru, are now at Taiporohenui. It is understood that the meeting is for the purpose of discussing and deciding whether' they -will attend a big meeting to be held at Aramoho shortly. * * * * *
The Wellington “Post” says that the idea is growing rapidly into a conviction that the Exhibition will not be a conspicuous success. All public interest in it, in fact, seems to be dying out, and little or nothing is being done to keep that, interest alive. The “Times,” on the other hand, holds the contrary opinion. * * * *
The Otaki Maoris have been considering a ease of witchcraft on the pnrt of an old man. The decision is to ship him back to the Waikato.
