SOUTHERN TEAM WINS

INTER PROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH WITH COUNTRY ELEVEN margin; of no runs. By the comfortable margin of 110 runs the South Taranaki A grade representative cricket eleven at Stratford yesterday beat North Taranaki Country. South did not make a spectacular opening, but steady scoring all the way through built up the total to 184. The last four wickets added over 50 runs. North made a poor display, Penny dismissing the tail cheaply, so that the total was only 74. The match was decided on the first innings, although North followed on in an uncompleted second innings at the finish. .South won the toss and elected to bat first.

R|. Barlow and W. Barker were the first to face the bowlers and both opened confidently enough. Barlow scored two singles and a two in good style, hut a leg break by S. Giddy in the third over took his stump right out of the ground—Cue wicket down for four runs. R. Eden then joined Barker at the crease and contributed seven to a. partnership of 21 before ho was clean howled by E. Giddy, making two wickets down for 25 runs. V. Betts was the next batsman to go to the wicket and he became associated with Barker in a partnership that passed 50 without a further loss of wickets. At this stage of the game boundaries had been few, a four to Barker and a six to Betts being the total. Twos were numerous, as were singles. Barker snipped a hard chance through the slips to run for a three which broke a run of singles to take the score past CO. Grey in the outfield dropped an easy catch from Betts. The third wicket fell for 66 when a smart return from the field caught Barker out of the crease for 20. Meuli was the fifth batsman to go to the wicket and after scoring a single was caught at square leg by O. Foreman off Spence Giddy. At this stage of the game the scoreboard read .67—4—1.

Seventy was passed when a good ball by Y. Betts went to the boundary for four. He hit the next ball for four also. The over finished and Geary snicked the first ball in the next oyer for a single to give Betts the bowling again. Betts accepted the opportunity and smashed a ball to the boundary for four. He then gave a fairly difficult chance for a catch but the fieldsmen were out of position and he was safe, and the over finished without additional score.

T.he luncheon adojurnment was then taken. '

At this stage of the game Giddy had bowled nine overs and taken two wickets for a total of 17 runs. Kivoll had bowled eight overs at a cost of 18 runs without taking a wicket and E. Giddy had taken one wicket for 13 runs after bowling five overs. Leg byes four and byes eight added 12 to the score to make the luncheon adjournment total 84 for the loss of four wickets.

When play was resumed Betts opened the score with a three and Geary ran two in the same over. A four to Betts carried the score past 90. A single hit by Geary nearly cost Betts his wicket, a smart throw-in shattering the wickets just as he reached the crease. Betts was hitting well and soon carried the score up to 100. Scoring, which had been brisk, slowed up a little till a. hard-hit ball by Betts brought the score to 110. Almost immediately a. hall from S. Giddy beat him and took his wickets. His score was 53 and the total 115 for five wiclcots down.

Whalen, the next man in, opened his score with a four that was almost caught by the 'fieldsman on the boundary. Whalen was playing well and scored with square-cut strokes. Good bowling slowed the scoring and two successive maiden overs were bowled. Whalen narrowly missed being caught when he flicked a ball past the wicketkeeper. Pl© ran a two off the last ball of the over. Geary sent the next ball for four. He glanced the last ball of the over for a single and faced the bowler again. The scoreboard showed 130 runs. Spence Giddy sent a straight ball to shatter Geary’s wicket. He had made 11 runs—Six wickets down for 13Q runs. Penny opened his account with a single and Whalen scored a- single off the same over. Good fielding kept the runs down till Whalen hit hard to run a two, then lifted the ball right out off the ground tor six. He hit a four off the same over and ran the last ball for a single to face the howling again. An attempt at a single resulted in Penny being run out, to put South seven wickets down for 145. Buist, the next man, failed to open his account before he was bowled by Spence Giddy. Whalen continued to play Spence Giddy confidently, though finding the ball coming a. little too short for him. He was particularly good on deliveries on the off. Pritchard started well, treating even yorkers with confidence.

The scoring continued steadily, both batsmen losing no opportunities. J. Sarten gave Pritchard a chance when he dropped him at silly mid-off, and a moment later Pizzey just failed in a great dive for a low hall from Whalen. Pizzey took the bowling and His first ball Whalen hit hard and high. O. Foreman put tip one hand and at the limit of his reach just took it. It fell, but he caught it again in the same hand. It was a fine catch and a fortunate one for North. Thrush hit out quickly for eight, but was run out. North made a rather unfortunate start, S. Giddy going out l.b.w. to Thrush in the first over of the innings. O. Foreman and E. Giddy confined their activities to singles and twos, so that the score crept up but slowly. Foreman was run out at 13, and E. Giddy reached the same total only t< fall a victim to Pritchard.

Spence Giddy livened the proceedings with three fours, hitting both Pritchard and Thrush freely. He lifted Penny in great style for an apparently certain, boundary, but V. Betts raced across to take a. splendid catch in the outfield. Kivell did not- last long and after adding nine runs to the sadly small total he was clean howled by Prichard. Norm. Giddy started quietly, then lashed out to take a good six off Penny. The howler had his revenge soon afterwards, however, when he caught the hall from an awkward stroke to mid-on off Geary. The tail then profceeded to fail dis-

mally, the last five wickets going for four or five runs. Penny did most of the damage, the batsmen lifting his deliveries to make them an easy prey for the fieldsmen. Thrush’s catch in the deep field when P. Snrten hit out at Penny was a, good one, but the others came. easy.

Although the match was decided, North fallowed on until six o’clock, but could do little better. In about three-quarters of an hour they had made 54, at which stage stumps were drawn. Details of the scores are : SOUTH TARANAKI. Fii'st Innings.

WEDNESDAY TEAM’S WIN DEFEAT OF RUR AL ELEVEN MARGIN OF OVER. 100 RUNS;. Gouth Taranaki Wednesday representatives had an easy win from a Rural Cricket Association team at King Edward Park yesterday,, over 103 runs separating the two elevens on the first innings. After a rather unpromising start, the Wednesday side made 190, thanks to a good performance by the tail. Rural replied with 71 and in a second innings had lost nine for 96 when stumps were drawn.

Of Wednesday’s first six batsmen, only two reaohed double figures—

Christie (38) and Fleet (12). Although rather lucky, Christie nevertheless played a sound bat. Rogers (20) was associated with Christie for a short period, hut it was left to Thomas (47) and Barnes (40) to add 74 runs for the eighth wicket. Each player scored freely, and together were responsible for more than Rural’s first innings total. Toro ,with four for 36, was Rural’s best bowler. Rural batted 12 men in their first innings. Although every player opened his account, only one reached double figures—Gane (10). Gane was well down on the list and was the only batsman to show opposition to the bowling of Frazer (four for 17), Thomas (two for 4) and Kennedy (two for 18). In. Rural’s second innings Campbell' with 30 retined wafs .top scorer. Howell made 22 and H. Hughes and Bocock. 14 apiece, Christie took three for 13. Scores are: WEDNESDAY TEAM. Longstaff. c H.
