The Hawera Borough Council decided last night to call tenders for sinking two storage wells in the borough —one in High Street and the other in Princes Street.

Mr A. 11. Duff, chairman of the library committee, has received information from the Government of the amount of suosidy coming to the Hawera library this year out of the library vote. The Secretary for Education, Dr. Hislop, says that there were 355 applications for assistan.ee out of the £4OOO vote, and that the subsidyworks out at 4s in the £, in which case I-lawera gets £l3 4s 4d, for which a cheque was sent. sj* # $ ❖

At a meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor reported that he had waited on Captain Wray, and that gentleman had said lie did not think it wise to put a market on the reserve, as it would probably be required for buildings some day. He had suggested that the council should endeavour to get a section on the other side of Albion Street. Cr. Henderson thought they had better try and get the other section, and when they liad. a proper representative in Parliament they might get the piece they wanted. This was agreed to. * * * * *

The contractors for the formation of the Aliaipaipa Road appear to be doing justice to the work, but it seems to be progressing rather slowly. The winter will soon be on us, when carting metal along newly-formed bush roads will be an utter impossibility. It is hoped that the road board members will remember this, anil will lose no time in hurrying on this most needful and important work.
