DEATH OF PROMINENT MAORI
MOTHER OF LADY POMARFJ CHURCHWOMAN AND SPORTS PATRONESS (SJy Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE!, To-day. The death has occurred of Meri Woodbine Johnson, 81 years of age, widow of the late James Woodbine Johnson, formerly a, well-known pioneer Poverty Bay farmer. Deceased was the daughter of a prominent. Maori of the Ngatikahungunu tribe and mother of Lady Pomare. She was greatly respected throughout her life by pakeha settlers ,and was a keen churchwoman and sports patroness.
