KAPONGA SCHOOL COMMITTEE

PARENTS’ DAY ARRANGED

FOLK DANCING EXHIBITION.

Final arrangements for Parents’ Day, which is to be held at the Kaponga State school on Thursday next, were made at Monday’s meeting of the ICaponga School committee. The chairman (Mr. C. H. Brewer) presided and there were present -Messrs C. N. Gordge, H. C. Norgate, J. Taylforth, A. T. Honore (headmaster) and the secretary. The headmaster said that the school would be thrown open in the afternoon when parents,' desiring £o inspect tho premises- and note the. work routine, would be shown round. Folk dancing and singing games would be a feature of the afternoon.

In his monthly report to the committee, Mr Honore said there had been a slight improvement in the attendance since last meeting. The roll number was 92 and'the average attendance 87. The early closing of the school during the recent hot weather had been most beneficial to the pupils and it was hoped that similar action would be taken next year if conditions warranted. The work of the school was now proceeding apace, the division of pupils in the three classrooms being 30, 29 and 28. A recent inspection of the school garden and grounds had been carried out by Mr. I(i. Seine, the agricultural supervisor, who expressed pleasure at the conditions of the garden and the general improvement which had been eifected in the grounds The matter of children crossing the road to school in front of the Kaponga dairy factory was discussed. The Headmaster stated that there was a recent narrow escape from serious accident owing to a pupil crossing the road in the midst of dairy traffic. It was decided that scholars be instructed that the road crossing was to be mule lower down.

The visiting committee for Fobruaty, Messrs Gordge and Norgate, reported favourably upon the grounds and buildings. A number of .minor repairs to the buildings were required, but ii was understood the board’s architect had these in hand. In order to reduce the draught in the classrooms, it vras decided to arrange for the ventilator traps on the roof to bo closed during colder weather. Owing to the age oi tho building, these had evidently become fixed and could not be operated by ropes originally provided for closing when necessary.

Messrs Brewer and Taylfortli were appointed the visiting committee lor March.

The secretary reported that the annual balance-sheet had gone forward to the board for auditing. No «c----eolints were presented for payment and there was a credit at tho bank of ±-ll 16s Id. Most of this amount, however, would shortly be required for winter fuel.

Mr. Tayl forth, the committee’s dental clinic representative, reported that pupils were now receiving treatment at the Eltham clinic. To date, 18 pupils had paid fees for this year and he pointed out that the rules of the clinic provided that all fees must be paid by the end of March. Mr. Tayiforth was reappointed as the committee’s representative on the Eltham Dontal Clinic committee for the ensuing year. An offer of two cups for the school sports was made to the committee by the anonymous donor of the, cup for a boys’ and girls’ 75 yards championship at t.he recent school sports at OpunaioThe donor expressed a desire that Hiccup previously donated be retained for an annual 75 yards championship ten boys and girls over the same distance Ho was also prepared to donate larger cup for 120 yards open handicap for boys or girls. If this cup was won by any one pupil two years in succession or three at intervals, he was prepared to donate a further cup to take its place. The committe expressed thanks to the donor for his interest displayed in the children and agreed to provide for the races as desired
