SIDELIGHTS ON FORM

NOTES AND COMMENT Vintage out of Favour. After his defeat by Topical in the Essendon Stakes it is hard to see Vintage winning the Australian Cup to-morrow for at the weights he would have very little chance of reversing positions with Topical. A born stayer. the latter is inclined to be ‘‘iffy/’ bul if he produces his best form in the cup he seems sure to have a say in matters. Debut is Smart. At his best Debut is probably one of the most brilliant hacks in the Dominion, and should he be produced in the five furlongs hack event at Bulls to-morrow he is likely to lead the field a merry dance. It will be remembered that in his last, start Debut led for the greater part of the journey in a six furlong event at New Plymouth. Chances Favoured. The two-year-old Hunting Scene appears to be improving steadily, and after his recent good form will probably be sent out favourite in the Maiden event at Bulls to-morrow. At this time of the year a two : year-old is usually very hard to beat in this type of a race. Lifeguard Fancied. Despite his weight, Lifeguard will | take a power of beating in the Farewell Hack event at Bulls to-morrow, for he is undoubtedly a particularly brilliant customer <fver five furlongs. A good deal is likely to depend on the" barrier positions drawn, for the field is an exceptionally large one and an outside marble would mean a very severe Tace for Lifeguard under such an impost. One to Remember. After his impressive form at Hawera, Midian will have plenty of friends at Bulls to-morrow in whichever race he starts. He appears to [ have returned to his best form and J from now on he should be worth keep- j ing in mind. I
