DISTRICT SCHOOLS’ SPORTS

WAVERLEY "WINS CHAMPIONSHIP MARGIN OF 28 POINTS. The annual swimming sports, under the auspices of the Patea District Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association were held at M’averiey on Saturday afternoon. Beautifully line, with bright sunshine, the weather was ideal ror such sports. There was a very large attendance of the public, who showed much interest in the proceedings. Competitors came tjorn the schools at Waver!ey and Waverley Convent, Kohi, Waitotara, Alton, .Patea and Patea Convent. All events were keenly contested and in the majority the number of competitors was decidedly good. In the boys’ diving competition the number of entrants was 26 and the judges (Messrs O. Staite, J. Thomas .and N. Bromiley) had some difficulty in finally deciding the winner. The children showed themselves as adepts in the water, no doubt due to the hot summer weather of many weeks’ duration when children took every opportunity of being in the water. The masters of the respective schools worked hard to make the. afternoon the success it was. Results were as follow :

A relay race was won by the Waverley school. Men’s race, 50 yards.—J. Thomas 1, O. Oliver 2, A. Oliver 3. In the girls’ championship E. Oliver (Kohi) and M. Alexander (Waverley) were equal with 11 points each, but the cup was awarded' to E. Oliver as having most wins during the afternoon.

The boys championship was won hy E. O’Reiiiey (Patea Convent) with J. Elmslie (Waverley) second. The aggregate points in the schools’ championship were as follows: Waverley 51, Patea Convent 23, Kohi 11, Patea 5, Waitotara 4, Alton 4. At the conclusion of the events, Mr N. Bromiley, president of the association, explained that the certificates and trophies won during the afternoon would be presented at the athletic sports meeting held at Patea on March 16.
