CADETS UNDER CANVAS

WEEK’S TRAINING PLANNED. HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL GAMP. Cadets of the Hawera Technical High School company went under canvas at the Egmont A. and P. showgrounds this morning for a week’s training. The camp is attended by 183 cadets, 133 of whom will' remain at the showgrounds. The"' remaining" 50 are attending the training during the day-time only. 'This year additional accommodation was required,, the number, of boys under canvas being nearly 30 in excess of those in 1934. The Hawera Technical High School is the only secondary, school in the Dominion to hold a voluntary camp, under canvas, and supported entirely by the boys, since the Defence Department vote was reduced. Tents and instructional equipment are supplied by the Defence Department, but the expense of the commissariat is met by the cadets. A visit was paid to the camp by a ‘Hawera Star ’ reporter this morning. The tents had been erected in tidy lines and the cadets were receiving instruction in order and tidiness in tent lfe. A comprehensive course of training is planned and will cover all phases of camp life. The physical well-being of the cadet is not being neglected, and special instruction will follow in this direction. There are four platoons in camp. A section has been formed for the study of signalling, an innovation to the camp. The camp adjutant is Captain -J. N. Henry, N.Z.S.C., who has associated with him members of-the school staff—Captains H. G. Whitehead, W. W. Thomas and Lieutenants J.’Thomson and J. C. Findiater. The instructional staff are members of the defence headquarters permanent staff— S.S.M. J. 0. Rowe (Stratford), who is camp sergeant-major, S.M. J. T, R. Bell (New Iffy mouth), Sergeant J. A. Armstrong (New Plymouth), Private W. E. Grogan (Hawera) and Q.M.S. G. Quayle (Hawera). . Another innovation is a Red Cross tent, which, is conducted by cadets who have secured first aid certificates. Entertainment for both boys and officers is provided by a radio installed in the orderlv room by Mr W. W. Davy, of Hawera. During the evenings lectures will be delivered by members of the Red Cross Society. The camp will be thrown open" "to visitors on Wednesday afternoon. Any parent wishing tb communicate with a cadet may do so by calling number 2395.
