THURSDAY CRICKET MATCH. ROWAN’S NARROW WIN. (From Oar Own Correspondent.) The Kaponga Thursday cricket team suffered its .second defeat, when the team failed by four runs to reach the innings total of 126 scored by tjie Rowan team. Hie match was played at Victoria Park, Kaponga, in ideal weather. Rowan batted first. Kaponga fielded a weakened team, many of their players being unable to attend. * E. Smith and 0. Rowe, for Rowan, batted brightly, Rowe carrying his bat for 40, Smith being caught when at SB. D. Hollard 18, G. Riddick 9, an G. Cuff 8 also batted well. For Kaponga, Busing was in great form.- His score of 63 included no fewer than 8 fours and one six. Evans, Goodwin and Taylor all reached double figures. The bowling of both teams was severely punished and both sides resorted to numerous bowling changes. Thursday’s game was the last of the first- round, in which Oeo are th.e leaders, being two points ahead of Riverlea, Rowan and Kaponga, who are equal. Oep has lost one match, and the others two matches each. The second round is due to commence next Thursday.

PERSONAL AND GENERAL. . Hold in perfect sunny weather, the garden party at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Abbott, Eltliam Rlcad, on Thursday afternoon was largely attended. The function was organised, by St. Mark’s. Anglican Ladies’ Guild and a pleasant time was spent by visitors with tennis and croquet competitions. Mr. F. W. Fallows thanked Mr and Mrs. Abbott for ‘placing their grounds at the guild’s disposal, and then presented the trophies ■to the winners of the croquet competitions. The various winners were: “Golf,” Mrs. Tattersall 1, Mrs. Brewer 2; “Ladder,” Mrs. A. V. Tait and Mrs. F. W. Fallows (tie); " “hurry scurry,” Mrs. Tait and Mrs. Rothe. Afternoon tea, was served by the Misses Muir, Burt and RreAver,. Misses Ivy White and Grace Belli nre spending two months’ holiday in. Nelson. On Tuesday last, a social afternoon

was held in aid of the Kaponga branch of the Plunket Society. In* spite of the uncertain weather, there was a good attendance. A memory test competition was won. by Mrs Crowley, Kaponga. “Sketching your neighbour,” was won by Mrs J. Malone; and a paper tearing competition .(an elephant) went to Mrs. Schweiters, Auroa. Songs were rendered by Mrs McCook and Mrs. D. Benton. Mrs. Tait, president of the Kaponga Plunket Society, presented the trophies won, and thanked Mrs. Harre for organising the afternoon and all for their' support. Afternoon. tea brought a pleasant function to a close.
