AMONG THE SWIMMERS

HAWERA CLUB COMPETITIONS MARANUI BEATEN AT POLO NOTES BY “TRUDGEON”

The Hawera Amateur Swimming Club was unfortunate that rain caused the abandonment of w T hat-promised to be an excellent programme, with Lyall Bay Surf Club as the star performers of the night.

It would appear that the executive officials of . the club did not give the carrying on of mo carnival full consideration, as the public had congregated outside tne baths in a good crowd before official notification of the abandonment of the carnival Avas given. “Trudgeon” is of the opinion that with some enthusiasm the carnival could have been made a success.

One or two impromptu events -were held, featuring mainly in a 50 yards scratch race, in which J. C. Blakeley (Lyall Bay, Wellington) just got home .from I. Jobson (Hawera) in a great race.

J. Williams (Wellington backstroke champion), G. Williams, and Milligan gave an interesting exhibition of backstroke sAvimming.

At water polo Lyall Bay went doA\ T n to the undefeated Hawera team by four goals to tAvo, in one of the best exhibitions of Avatcr polo seen at Hawera. Last -Saturday night at NeAV Plymouth the Hawera polo team met a team from the Maranui Club, the Hawera combination proA’ing itself too good in all departments for the Wellington team, winning by five goals to nil.

The New Zealand surf championships, Avere to be held at Eitzroy beach last week-end, had to be transferred to Ngamotu on account of the sea at Fitzroy being littered with logs and debris brought down by the floods. It was rather unfortunate, especially as there was a fine surf running at Eitzroy, while at Ngamotu the sea was as calm as the baths.

The Lyall Bay Club, which won the Nelson Shield, has every reason to be proud of its organisation and efficiency as they were successful in haAung two teams in the final of the Nelson Shield, three teams in the final of the Ncav Zealand beltman’s championship, and one team in the final of the four-man.

The OhaAve team, while not placed in any finals, ga\’e a good alround exhibition in all events that they were entered in and had the surf boon of a rough nature they may have found a place in one of the finals. In the heat of the Nelson Shield Clarke (patient) and Tarrant (beltman) put up a fine performance to gain fastest time, finishing just ahead of Maranui. Tofmorrow Ohawe goes to Castlecliff to defend the Hackshaw Searle shield which they were successful in winning last season.

On Wednesday next at New Plymouth the Taranaki Centre is holding a carnival, at which the famous French swimmer, Taris, and the diver, Poussard, will be ' appearing. The following is the result of club competitions to date. In the banner competition the points are: Captain’s Team 1094 points, Vice-Captain’s Team 135-1 points.
