March Alone was first out from Colossal, but passing the stand Gowanlca ran through to take the lead, only to be displaced going out of the straight by Colossal. A furlong later March Alone hit the front again, with the others handy. Three furlongs from home Colossal took charge, but at the last fence Beau Star was just ahead of Colossal and March Alone. A great finish saw Colossal win by a nise, with Beau Star half a length away. The standard of jumping throughout was very poor, and too much notice need be taken of this form.

One Whetu challenged the leader at the distance peg, but Eara won by a length without being extended, with Ringside a similar distance away. Dombey was fourth and General Quex last. Eara won well and she is a much improved filly. One Whetu registered his usual solid performance. Ringside had every chance, but Dombey and General Quex were, never possibilities.

(Winner trained by owner, Hawera.) A great finish . saw the first four horses pass the post almost in line.: Diavet and Joy Box were first out,; making the pace a cracker to lead down the back stretch from Passing Fancy and Kaola. At the half-mile Colossal ran up on the outside, with Ivaola and Red Sand also improving their positions. Into the straight Colossal led Ivaola, Red Sand and Passing Fancy. A great set-to between the quartette saw Passing Fancy win by a head, Ivaola being half a neck away and Colossal only a. head further back. Joy Box was fifth and Daivet next. Passing Fancy finished strongly. Colossal was rather unlucky in covering extra ground. Ivaola is a likely improver, while Red Sand ran his best race to date.
