THE FEMININE STARS
ALL OUTDOOR WOMEN Tiic feminine slurs of the motion picture firmament are all outdoor women. There isn’t a hot house type among them. Outdoor exercise, outdoor games, outdoor sports, hobbies and avocations make them as healthy a group of young women as can be found anywhere. Rub}' Keeler is an enthusiastic golfer. By the end of the summer she is collec brown. She plays daily and she shoots in the eighties. Barbara Stanwyck is a bicycle enthusiast, an expert swimmer and a tennis addict. She lives outdoors on the Brentwood estate, which is big enough to let her exercise all her outdoor hobbies. Dolores del Rio has her own swimming pool, her own tennis and badminton courts. Sun batlis are a part of her daily routine. She spends more than half her time outdoors. Greta Garbo’s walks in the mountains north of Santa Monica are internationally famous. Another who goes for long and strenuous hikes is Aline MacMalion, who climbs the same mountains and follows the same unfrequented trails made famous by Miss Garbo. Miss MaeMahon also enjoys gardening. Kay Francis ilkes the ocean and spends many week-ends afloat on the Pacific. She has her own small schooner. Tennis is her favourite game. Jean Blundell is an open-air enthusiast of the first-water. Camping and fishing trips form her favourite recreation. She likes to swim, to hike, to hunt and fish, and slie is never happier than when in camp a hundred miles from civilisation. Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Carole Lombard are all suibtan devotees. Bette- likes to bicycle, and all three of them swim well and ride often. Ann Dvorak is to be found as often as not in shorts and shirt oh her ranch house gardens. Margaret Lindsay has become interested in archery as a fresh air recreation and outdoor ping-pong tables are found in almost every film star’s gar-' dens. All of this makes Hollywood actresses about the healthiest group of women to be found anywhere. Picture making Is a strenuous business, but the panacea for all its ills is found in the great outdoors.
