CHIEF SCOUT AT HASTINGS
CAMP FIRE WELCOME GIVEN.

A camp fire welcome attended by hundreds of Scouts and Guides was given Lord Baden Powell at Beatson s Park this •. evening. Besides a large representation of the town and surrounding districts of Hastings there were large contingents from Napier, Manawatu and the smaller towns of Hawkes Bay. Great interest was shown by the public Commissioner Cooksey was in charge of proceedings and speeches -of welcome were made by Mr A. I. Rainbow, deputy-Mayor of Hastings, and Mr C. O. Morse, Mayor of Napier. The evening was. spent in true-Scout fashion. The public was entertained to a programme of hakas, scout cries and chorus singing.
In honour of liis 78th birthday on Friday Lord Baden-Powell was presented with a New Zealand rug. which he promptly’ draped about himself before making a speech of thanks. His informal manner of acting and’ speaking and his vigorous utterance and youthful geniality made a great impression on everyone.
