FLORAL STUDIES IN OILS

HAWERA WOMAN’S GIFT. 1 PAINTINGS GO TO NEW PLYMOUTH. Over 200 paintings in oils of the native flowers- of New Zealand, all sketched as appearing in their native conditions and each and all depicted after the natural colouring of the flower, have been handed to the New Plymouth Public Library and Museum committee on behalf of Miss Fanny Good, “Raumanui,” Hawera, and a number of personal friends interested in her artistry. “The collecting and painting of this striking collection has been a life work and no one hut an enthusiast in the love of Nature, and one also gifted as an artist, could have carried out the immense amount of work entailed in outlining and completing in the endless variety of colour that Miss Good ha s done —a labour not only demanding a great industry physically and mentally, but also a severe tax on the sight,” said the chairman of the Library and Museum Committee at a meeting on Tuesday night, when the gift was accepted. With regard to sight, regret was expressed that Miss Good’s sight had suffered greatly by the strain brought on by her concentration on the minute detail required to be shown in so many of these paintings. It was resolved that the thanks of tho committee on behalf of the institution he given to Miss Good and her supporters for the gift of this valuable collection of paintings of New Zealand flowers, and that a letter be written to Miss Good conveying the committee’s special thanks for her valuable and greatly appreciated gift. Interviewed in Hawera to-day, a member of the family stated that the paintings wore regarded as of great value and they had been removed to New Plymouth as much for safety as for exhibition purposes.
