SLUM CLEARANCE
Ambitious Plans for Congested Areas in Britain
OVERCROWDING PENALTIES STATE SUBSIDY SCHEME (United Press Association —By electric Telegraph Copyright), (Received 2 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Jan. 17. Britain’s great slum clearance scheme appears in the text of the Housing Bill, involving ambitious plans for dealing with overcrowding and the re-developing of residential districts in large, congested towns. The measure seeks without delay to provide accommodation without undue disturbance of the large populations at rents within the scope of the wage earners. The Bill legally defines overcrowding and provides for a penalty of £5, plus £3 for each day the overcrowding continnes. Big subsidies are envisaged, and include at least £6 yearly per fiat- for forty years from the State, plus £3 from the local authority.
