LONDON’S CRIMINALS
ABOUT 1500 AT BRIGHTON WORK FOR SCOTLAND YARD Lord Trent-hard, when he took over control of Scotland Yard, ordered a comb-out of London’s underworld and criminals, who had lived there securely for rears, were forced to leave. Local police at Brighton have long been aware that many of these undesirables had tied there, but the public has only recently been startled into recognition of Brighton’s low life by two “trunk” murders. For one of these Tony Mnnoini has just been found not guilty; nobody has been arrested for the first “trunk” crime. So both are unsolved. During the investigations into the murders, which are still continuing, and in which Scotland L ard took pai t, some startling revelations were made. Aleu who the Yard liad thought had escaped to the Continent were found in Brighton, and one authority estimates that there are at least 1600 people now living in tho underworld of this seaside resort whose records are filed at Scotland Yard. Drug traffickers are among the chief criminal element at Brighton, and the town’s easy access to the Continent makes their trade more simple. But when the net was cast for both “trunk” murders, many of these smaller fish were caught in its meshes, and are now in gaol.
