HAWERA SCOTTISH SOCIETY

PICNIC AT TE NGUTU * SPORTS EVENTS FOR THE CHILDREN Amidst the picturesque and historic setting of Te Ngutu o te Manu Domain, near Okaiawa, members of the Hawera Scottish Society yesterday held their annual picnic and spent what all declared to he a thoroughly enjoyable outing. The attendance was not as large as was anticipated owing, no doubt, to at least two counter-at-tractions and the absence of several members on holidays. Nevertheless, between 50 and 60 took part, a special bus accommodating those who were unable to travel by private car. On the grounds jolly parties picnicked in the shade of trees and during the afternoon wandered leisurely through the bush. Organised sports were conducted for the children and in this connection Chief D. McCormick proved himself an indefatigable host with the assistance of Mr D. Wards (chieftain), anti Mrs J. W. Velvin, Mrs J. Matheson and Mrs J. R. Nairn. Races, tugs-of-war and lolly scrambles were ample entertainment for the young folk while numbers of their elders found sufficient diversion on the tennis courts. Pipe music by members of the Hawera Highland Pipe Band served to enliven the proceedings.
