AMONG THE SOUTHERN ALPS

SEVERAL NEW ASCENTS ALPINE CLUB EXPLORATION WOFK CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4. Extensive exploration work by the largest organised party of climbers ever to attempt serious tasks on the Southern Alps was undertaken dining the holiday period. The weather conditions seriously handicapped their efforts, nevertheless several hitherto unclimbed peaks wore conquered, the principal virgin ascents being Mount Louglinan and Mount Gori’ie, while Mount D’Archiac was attacked from a new angle, and a successful climb was accomplished. The party comprised thirty-six members of the New Zealand Alpine Club, the organisation oeing in the hands of the Wellington section of the club. The members included two veteran pioneer alpinists, Mr Guy Manncring and Mr A. P. Harper. Other members were drawn from Auckland, Wellington, Napier, Dunedin, and Christchurch. The party was based on the club’s new hut on the Godley Glacier, 18 miles from the Lilybank Station.
