PATEA SURF CLUB

SUCCESSFUL YEAR. REVIEWED. ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS, r (From Our Own Correspondent). P The annual meeting of the Patea Surf and Life-Saving Club was held 1 in the County Council Chambers on r Wednesday evening, Mr A. Maxwell s presiding. Those also present were r Messrs W. Lamb, K. Bourke, C. ; Papps, Burgess, R. Adams, Harkness, Lazarus, A. McDonald (lion, seeretand Miss D. Roberts. Tlie annual report stated that during the past year the activities of the Patea Surf and Life Saving Club had been maintained and the present position of the club both numerically and financially, was most satisfactory. Competitions were held at the Patea beach during January, 1934, at which Ohawe, New Plymouth Old Boys, Opunake, Castlecliff and Patea teams competed. Although the water work had to be postponed owing to the buoy breaking loose, Patea had 10 points lead in the land work. The water work was lator completed at Opunake, but owing to the line becoming tangled, Patea was placed second. At Opunake*!, Patea won the Grey Shield for the march past and tied in the competition for the Tabor Shield. During the year the Patea team gave a demonstration in conjunction with the Castlecluiff team at Kai Iwi, while some time later, a team was entered for the competition at Ohawe beach,, but on this occasion, owing to the late arrival, the team was unable to compote. The competition for the Hackshaw Searle Shield, which • was won by Patea in 1933, was held at Castlecliff, and resulted in a win for Ohawe. During the year practices

were held regularly and the attendance .well maintained. An indication that surfing was becoming popular with the young men of the town was shown by the increased membership, which was at present more than double that of the previous year. The committee wished to take the oppor-

tunity of paying a tribute to the members of the various teams for their exemplary conduct and good discipline during the past year and trusted that this high standard would be maintained: in the future. During the year, members of the surf cliib had given instruction in life sawing to Girl Guides, and had also assisted children in the district to gain a knowledge of swimming. The President’s Cup, presented by Air Fred Locker, a past president, for the bridge to beach swim was won by E. Oakley. The financial position of the club had never been so satisfactory as at the present time. While a number of small dances were held for the purpose of meeting the dub’s liabilities, the recent ball, whereby a profit of over £2O was made, had placed the funds m a very satisfactory condition. The thanks of the committee were due to all those who so generously gave dona-

tions and trophies during the year; to the Domain Board for the use of the shed, to the County Council for the use of their room for meetings, tp .the ladies’ committee who worked so willingly, to the Press ami to all those who assisted in furthering the object of the club which aimed at popularising swimming and placing opportunities in the way for all to learn to swim.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance c f . £2O Os lid.

Mr W. Lamb congratulated the club on its work during the- year..
