A beauty spot in one of Hawera’s attractions. Naumai Park, from a new angle, showing the newly erected shelter hut, which has been built by Mr Louis Park, the front being carved in true Maori style. A remarkable transformation has taken place during the last ten years in an area which was formerly a horse paddock used by the Hawera Borough Council, and what has now come to be Naumai Park. The original committee consisted of Messrs J. Garnett, C. M. Haggett, and G. S. Watts, and the work accomplished by them is ample reward for their efforts, which have added an attractive native park to the playgrounds of Hawera. The whole of the area is planted, mainly with native shrubbery, while here and there flourish, in sheltered spots, trees which become during the passage of years giants of the forest. Of these, the kauri and rimu are represented, but as yet are only very young. Two years ago, an area of two acres was added to the park, and this has been planted with shrubs, which are thriving under expert attention. When this area reaches maturity, the park will be one of the best of its kind in the Dominion, compared with the size of the town.
