Born in Berlin in 1535 Hohemvald joined the Lehr Infantry Regiment in September, 1914, and had his first taste of fire against the Russians on the Ivangerod, South Poland front in October, ISI4. He was promoted to the rank of lance-corpqral in March, 1915, and was wounded while fighting I at Oarphoi, South Hungary. Rejoin-; mg Ins regiment in June, 1915.. lie was I sent to Champagne, France, and afterseveral months in this sector his regi-’ ment was again hurried to the 'Galicia-I South Hungary Front, where lie was! wounded for the second time, rejoiningl his regiment again at Verdun, France,' in March, 1916. The same year hej fought at Arras, Yser, Champagne and* the Somme. / Prom the Somme he went to Rumania and helped tp take the i ..;d Tower Pass Lake. Here he was wounded for the third time and put to duties as instructor corporal No. 3 Battalion Machine Gun Corps. When lie had recovered from his wounds Hohenwaid was sent to I pres, and then to Macedonia. In 1918 his corps was transferred ,to Palestine, where lie was wounded the fourth time.

On his discharge from hospital on this occasion he was posted to the duties of chauffeur fo r staff officers, a position he held until the end of hostilities. He was discharged from the army at. Trvl and decorated with the Iron Cross.

In the four years he served Hohenwald had only 14 days’ leave. His pay was 4d a day as a private and 7d as sergeant, to which rank he finally rose At the end of his service he received a gratuity of £2 10s, but no pension. After the. war Hohenwald joined the mercantile marine and went to Aus-: tralia, where he married. He arrived in New Zealand some months ago, and has been employed at the Rangiora Fleur Mills ever since.
