HAWERA DEBATING SOCIETY
mating held COMPETITIVE EXAMINATIONS Mr Malcolm-Niccol presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Hawera Literary and Debating Society held last evening, when there was a fair attendance of members. By invitation, the girl pupils of Form VI of the Hawera Technical High School were present.
The s.ubject for debate was “That competitive examinations are detrimental to the future well-being of the youth of this country.” Mr A. F. Olsen (leader), Miss J. Henson and Mr H. M. Westwood introduced the affirmative argument, while the negative was taken by Misses D. Bates (leader), J. Bray and Mr R. Macrae Fittall. The judge for the evening, the Rev. A. G. Irvine, gave his de-. cision for the affirmative. On the motion of Mr Olsen, a vote of thanks was accorded the Rev. Irvine.
Mr J. Dash, principal of the Hawera Technical High School, thanked the Society for the invitation extended to the pupils of the school and expressed their pleasure at the evening’s entertainment.
On behalf of the society Mr T. M. Ellis (president), expressed his gratification at the attendance of the senior pupils, and extended an open invitation to them to attend any of the society’s gatherings.
It was announced that the next meeting would take the form of a literary evening as it was felt that the literary side of the society’s activities had been neglected.
