LOYALTY TO HITLER

IMPRESSIONS OF GERMANY. SOBER- MINDEBNESS OF PEOPLE The extraordinary loyalty to Hitler, and the sincerity and sober-minded-ness of the people are features that impress the tourist in Germany, according to Air T- A. Griffiths, an official of the Broken Hill Steel Co., Newcastle, who is a through passenger to Sydney by the Maunganui, which arrived, at Wellington on Alonday from San Francisco. Air Griffiths has fepen investigating! thje modern methods used in the steel industry in England and the Continent. Throughout Germany, he said in ail .interview, it was interesting to see everybody exchanging salutation with the ‘‘Hail, Hitler” sign. As an example, in the Krupp steelworks some of the executive officers gave the sign hundreds of times a day; in fact, every time they met employees, and the latter, of course, returned the salute.

The steel industry in England and Germany, said Air .Griffiths, seemed to he on the upgrade. Following a long period of depression, German firms were working about 50 per cent, capacity compared with 10 -per cent, or 15 per cent, previously. The improvement in business was attributed to Hitler’s economic policy. There was no restriction placed on persons wishing to inspect the Krupp works and there did not appear to be any activity regarding the manufacture of munitions. The executive officers were courteous and freely gave information concerning the works. There were no sighs of dissatisfaction in Germany at the -present time, the people being quiet and orderly. World conditions were having an effect on industry generally, as the exporting powers of the country lmd diminished. Germany was friendly towards England, but strong feeling still existed towards France. The most interesting feature of Holland was the reclaiming of the Zuyder Zee, a work which had been going on for three or four years. There were no signs of the depression lifting in Holland on account of the high tariff imposed by Great Britain on Butch exports. “Everywhere people commented on the satisfactory and commendable way in which Australia and New Zealand - were becoming more balanced economically,” concluded Air Griffiths.
