ST. JOHN’S INSTITUTE
WANiGANIUI AIHAIBBRS’ VISIT. HAWERA SOCIAL AND DEBATE. Air B. O. Glen presided over an attendance of 50 members and friends at a. meeting of the St. Johji’s Young People’s Institute last night. AL Glen, on behalf of the institute, welcomed the members ef the Wanganui Institute. Musical items were rendered by Miss Gwen Reid (piano solo), Atessrs. R. Glen and Murray (vocal duet), Air R. Kirkby (vocal solo), Air C. Laurent (piano solo). The rest of the evening took the form of a debate, “Is Government Control of Broadcasting in the best interests of the Community?” The affirmative was taken by a team from the St. John’s Institute and the negative by a team from Wanganui.
The affirmative team was: Air A. G. Alacßae (leader), Aliss Lorna Campbell, and Mr J. Mortlock. The Wanganui team was: Air Rl. Glen (leader), Air Slierriff and Air D. Laurent. The judge (Mr F. W. Horner) awarded the issue to the Wanganui team by two marks. Mr R.. Glen was adjudged the best speaker on the negative .side and Air J. Alortlock on the affirmative. Air B. Watts occupied the chair.
Votes of thanks to Mr Horner, Air Watts and the speakers were carried by acclamation.
Supper, served by the ladies, terminated a successful meeting.
