Hospital Staff Salaries

Board Declines to Restore the Five Per Cent. Cut By a vote of six to four the Hawera Hospital Board at a meeting this morning decided not to follow the action of the Government in restoring the 5 per cent, cut iu salaries and give the hospital staff a similar restoration. The issue was raised by Mr F. Gillanders, who stated that the Government had given an indication of a return of confidence by the restoration of the 5 per cent, cut in salaries to the civil servants. From the financial statement it was quite evident that the board had the money, as for the first five months of the current financial year a credit balance of £SOB was shown. To restore the 5 per cent, cut to the members of the hospital staff would cost approixmately £2OO for the remainder of the financial year.

Mr Gillanders was supported in his contentions by Messrs W. G. Simpson and I. J. Bridgor.

Speaking against the motion, Mr T. A. Winks regretted his inability to support it. "It hurts me very much to have to vote against it,” he said, "but I think we had better wait until the end of the financial year and then review the position.” Mr J. S. McKay, the chairman, was also against the motion, stating that the price of primary produce was lower now than it was when the cut was first made. He considered, therefore, that the time was not yet opportune, and would vote against it. Those voting for the motion were Messrs F. Gillanders, W. G. Simpson, E. A. Washer and I. J. Bridger. Those recording their votes against it were Messrs J. S. McKay, T. A. Winks, E. J. Gifford, S. J. Bennett and A. Larcom.
