RAIN MARS MEETING

EGMONT SECOND DAV TOTALISATOR, SHOWS INCREASE INVESTMENTS £3,207 UP. Fortunate on the first day, the Figmdrit Racing Club was unlucky with weather fconditjkmis yesterday incessant •••rain' Spoiling what would have "been the most successful gathering held by the club for some years. The course was in wonderful order on Wednesday, and the times recorded were remarkable for a winter meeting. The close finishes in the majority of the races twere a tribute to the handicapper, Mr' A. Tronson. "An inquiry was held concerning the ruririing of Orapai in the Mokoia Handicap, but was * adjourned. ' The totalisator investments _yesterday showed an increase of £971 over the second day last year, the figures being £6533 and £5562 respectively. The total for the two days of the meeting was £14,990 10s, against £11,783 last (year, an increase of £3207 10s. : ' ' The Hawera steeplechaser C-opey was unable to be started in the Figment steeplechase, and liis defection robbed the race of considerable local interest. Hawera horses were not very successful. J. Fryer’s Huri being the only straight out winner, minor pricings being filled by Silk Sox, Carfex, Oriel and The Tiger. ' Carfex was a hot favourite for his race yesterday and made a game effort to win. leading practically all the way, but’Prince Colossus finished too strongly for him over the last 50 yards and won' decisively. The Tiger showed his old brilliancy on the first day, from his standing start he covered the first two furlongs in 24ksec, the six furlongs, owing to The Tiger pacemaking, being covered in I.l3sec—an exceptional gallop. ' Riotous showed up very attractively' as y a steeplechaser, his performance—with the exception of one jump—being brilliant, and he should prove a useful stake earner. Brown Abbey, who came with a reputation from Auckland, tried to go with Riotous all the way, but Riotous qutjumped his rival at every fence. In the absence of Riotous yesterday Brown Abbey gave a much better exhibition afid had no difficulty in spring. ■' When Don Erma was trained at Ha-wera-a. few months back, Trainer Conway had riot much opportunity to build hint up' solidly, and though always' a clever and fast jumper he lacked stamina, failing to finish on in his races. It was a very different Don Erma, at this meeting, and he should not be long in winning, for his connections. The two hurdle races run at the meetingwere as good as could be wishl ed for, providing splendid contests euch day. Pahii revelled in the heavy going yesterday and is back to his best form. Ah improver who is racing very consistently ts Esteem, and his turn should not be far ‘‘off.

Richfield. who had been schooling well, refused to go away with his field each day, but made up a lot of ground over the final stages. Chief Line ran two good races, making his bekt 'showings to date, but Stanchion again failed baldly. '* Oriel wasi produced for the second day 'and was backed and beaten, but the heavy going was a contributing factor to Oriel’s defeat, as he does not go well in slippy going.
