The appointment by the GovernorGeneral in Council o£ Mr W. F. L. Ward as Deputy-Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zeaalnd as from May 1 was announced yesterday Le the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. Mr Ward recently retired from the position of inspector ol the Bank of Australasia, in New Zealand after 45 years’ sendee with that institution.

Mr Ward was born in Marton in 1871, being the second son of the late Judge Robert Ward, and grandson of the late Rev. Robert Ward, an early missionary who arrived in New Zealand in 1841. He was educated at Wanganui Collegiate School, and joinei. the Bank of Australasia at Wangami. as a boy of 16. He was soon a-vter-wards transferred to Foxton, and in the following year lie went to Christchurch, where he remained till 1594. Ho then returned to the Wanganui branch, where lie served for six years, during which time he acter as relieving manager of West -Coast branches. In 1902 Mr Ward was appointed manager of the Manaia branch, and three years later he transferred to Eltham, where lie opened a new branch office. After six months at Eltliam he went to Hamilton to open a new branch. Mr Ward remained there foi ten years, and during that period lit opened and was in control of most of the bank’s branch offices in the Waikato. King Country, and Bay of Plenty districts.

From there lie was transferred to Wellington as manager in 1920, and was appointed inspector of the Bank of Australasia. New Zealand division, in July. 1925. holding this post until bis retirement in July, 1932, his total period of service with the bank 'being 45 years. For the last 20 months Mr Ward has acted as chairman of the Wellington Mortgagors’ Relief Commission.

The personnel of the directorate of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will be announced at an early date b\ the OVfiniste rof Finance, the Rt. Hon, J. G. C'oates. In accordance with legislation establishin'o- the bank, the Governor, Mi Leslie Lefeaux, and the DeputyGovernor, Mr W. F. L. Ward, will be members of the board of directors. The secretary of the Treasuary, Mr A. D Park, will also he a member by virtue of his office, but he will not he entitled to a vote at any meeting of the board. Seven other directors have yet to he appointed. Of this number, three will represent the Government and four the shareholders, two of the latter being representativs of primary producing interests and two of commepoe and industry.
