AUROA

HOUSEHOLDER S' MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The senior room of the Auroa scliooj ■was lined to capacity on ivionday evening, when there was again a iargt attendance of househohieis. Air A. C. Langlands, who presided, submitted a reort on the.year - s work. The receipts on the general account amounted to £ol 11s 2d and the payments to £45 18s 6d, stated the leport. The receipts on the special account amounted to £2l 7s 3d and the paymentsi to £l7 4s 3d. A profit pf £7 18s 2d was shown on the year s working, which must be considered very satisfactory in view of the fact that the previous year showed a loss of £44 Is 6d. The main item on the receipts side was capitation £SO. This was the- same as last year. _ On the expenditure side the cleaning and sanitary service this y'ear was £23 13s 2d and last year £22 2s lid. Fuel, lighting and water -supply this year wa s £lO Is 10d and last year £ls 8s Sd-, a decrease of over £5. Repairs and improvements this year were £1 12s Id and last year £24 5s 4d, a decrease of £22 odd. Books, stationery and committee expenses amounted to £lO 11s 5d and last year £lB 13s Bd. a decrease of £6 2s 3d. In the special or No. 2 account- the main items were: Receipts £l9 9s lOd,-mainly from the school concert and tne parents’ night dance. The expenditure showed the Afariain. dental clinic as £3 4s _9<l. against £8 Is Sd last year; picnics, sports -and prizes this year £l3 3s. last year £3 12s 6d. It must le remembered, however, that prize money for the Boys and Girls’ Clubs movement was not paid out last year. The average attendance for the year was roughly 118. The average roll number was 121 and the percentage was 94. This must also be considered verysatisfactory. Each month a member of the committee visited the school just prior to the committee meeting aiid reported on the general business of the school and also any necessaryrepairs or improvements that were considered necessary. The headmaster had reported each month that the caretaker had carried out his duties efficiently. Whilst on the subject of caretaker it might l>e remembered that the caretaker’s duties ended his term of one year on March 31 last, and the committee decided to ask him to carry on his duties until the May holidays instead of taking out a new contract. This the committee felt would allow the new committee to appoint a caretaker at a remuneration not detrimental to efficient working. During the year several working bees were held in the school grounds. Those were .attended by committee members and also by some residents on the Oeo side of the Auroa Road. To these the householders owed their thanks. Fences around the garden plots were repaired, also around the football field, hedges cut, wire-netting erected on tennis courts, holes filled up in front of doors, willows cut, and drain cleaned out. besides numerous other iobs. A shelter shed was nisi erected on the Rama Road by residents; this proved its worth, being very convenient on wet days. On August 18 a parents’ night was held in the Auroa hall in lieu of a parents’ day at the school. This proved both interesting and profitable, the sum of £3 Is 9d profit being shown on the evening. On December 15 the school concert was held. The performance was given entirely h— the pupils and was very good. This returned a net profit of £l4 3s 9d. Thanks were due tn those who' organised the concert. The services of flic drum and fife band were in demand during the year—on Christmas Eve at Alanaia, and also at Mamma, on band contest day and Anazc Dav. From reports the boys conducted themselves

very well, being congratulated on their playing. This was very gratifying to tiie committee and must also i be"to the parents of the boys. Thanks were due to Mr. Fail-brother for his work in coaching the boys. Jt was with regret that the eommit,ce had to receive the resignations of both Miss Scott and Miss Harkness and letters of appreciation were forwarded to them for their work whilst at Auroa and also wishing them sucess in their new positions. Miss J. McNeill took up her duties at the commencement of the new y’ear. llie addition of the extra teacher had necessitated the using of the hall for one class. This was very inconvenient and in the near future the class mav have to be shifted owing to the coldness of the hall. -Repeated applications to the board to relieve this have been finally rejected. . , , A The school picnic was liekl at upunake beach in February and proved very popular, resulting in a profit ot £\ "l-ts Bd. The headmaster attended all meetings of the committee*and submittocl n typed report of the inoiitli s proceedings. The thanks of the committee were due to him, his reports oeing of considerable help to the committee Owing to the statfe of the school'funds it might be necessary to make a levy on parents whose children attend the dental clinic. This matter voulcl be open for discussion. In conclusion the chairman thanked his fellow members on the committee for their co-operation and support durng the year; also all those who gave assistance to the school. The following resolutions were adopt ■cl unanimously. (1) That children of five years ot age be admitted to school. (9) That schools be graded on tne roll” number instead of on the average attendance” as at present. Mr Langlands expressed pleasure at seeing so large an attendance or householders. . . A tribute was paid to the work ot Vli- Langlands and Mr Wood, chairman and secretary respectively, who hacl lone Timch good work; also to Mr R. EDavison, who had been a member and had attended meetings for eight consecutive years. _ The new committee met after the election. There were present Messrs T. O. Duff (chairman), Mrs Benton isecretary' and Messrs T. Hooper, T. Tnworth T. Blair and J. Hooper. It was decided to hold comm. thee meetings on the first Wednesday of each month. Repairs to a chimney and window were noted, and goal posts ar<> to be made ream-" Tor the next term. Permission for the drum and fifehand to attend the Otakeho jubilee was .granted, sub'cct to the approval if tin- education board.
