ANNUAL MEETING OF BRANCH PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES 'REVIEWED Members present at the annual meeting held in the Albion Street rooms last evening of the 'Hawera branch of the Royal New .’Zealand (Plunket)' (Society for the Health of Women and Children were Mrs A. M. Winks (president) in the chair, Mcsdames P. Trim, G. <S. Pickett, iS. R. Veitcn, Dickie, A. K. Fyson, ;S. A : Chisholm, B. Haseltine, J. L. Carter, G. W. Powdrell. E. M. Bardsley, J. D. Tait (treasurer) and the Plunket Nurse (Miss J. McCall). Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames W. Fyfe, A. Beck (secretary), 11. E. Cressey and R. R. 'Henderson.

Of particular interest to members was the branch’s twenty-first annual report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a surplus of assets over liabilities of £Bl7 2s 7d. In the working account the branch commenced the year with funds at the bank, in the Post Office and on hand amounting to £254 6s 3d. Interest and subscriptions realised £2 12s Pld and £2B 0s Sd respectively, donations £26 4s 3d, proceeds (Women’s Club effort 14s 2d, Winter Show and street collections £59 16s 9d, anniversary ball £3'9 os 2d and summer show hoop-la £ls 12s sd) totalling £ll4‘Bs 6d, bequest £9 l’ls 3d, Government grants £l2O l'Ss 4d, sale of products £73 8s 4d and miscellaneous £2 3s 2d—a total of receipts amounting to £636 13s B<T. Payments during tne year included salaries, car and petty expenses £247 ll7s Id, insurances and hall upkeep £ll I9s'od, office expenses £l3 15s 9d, paritane products £63 16s lOd, general expenses £53 ;17s I—a total of'£39o ilos 9d, which left a balance in the bank at the Post Office and on hand of £245 17s lid.

Outstanding items were the apparent success of the twenty-first anniversary ball and also the substantial reduction in car maint.enajce and running expenses. Thu report referred generally to the activities of the 'branch and made mention of the fact that as the year marked the twenty-first anniversary of the forming of the iDranch, it was thought fitting to have the event celebrated. This took the form of a ball, which was a great success. On the afternoon iollowing, a children’s party was given and was attended ‘by about 700 children and many parents. The committee extended its thanks to the Ilawera Rotarians and all who helped to make the celebrations a success. During the year Mrs Tait attended the conference at Dunedin. The committee felt that the outcome was in the best interests of all concerned. The committee very much appreciated Nurse McCall’s excellent work among the mothers anti babies and thanked the Government for the subsidy towards car expenses, the Hawera “Star,” ’Hawera Borough Council, winter and summer, show committees, the honorary solicitor (Mr G. Chuck), honorary auditor (Mr E. K. Cameron), members of tne advisory board, especially Mr W. Jobson, the cai advisor, for nis help and advice in connectio.u with the Plunket car, and all donors and subscripers, as well as those who helped with time and money at all functions during the year. Nurse McCall's report reads as follows: New cases for the year, babies 164, expectant mothers 9, total 173; visits to homes, new cases 311, oh. cases 1443, total 1754; visits to rooms, adults 3368, older children 734, total 6913; telephone calls 1097, letters received 20, letters written 34; old eases under supervision, babies O( 70 older children 207, total 47:7. Two sets of twins had been borne in the district and one set was sent to Kantane Hospital where .they progressed satisfactorily. Two cases of severe malnutrition were treated during the veai and in both cases progress was slow but verv satisfactory. Very interesting and" useful work had been done among the Guides, the Rangers and the Red Cross members. Nurse McCall thanked the committee for its kind cooperation and help, and all others who | had assisted m any way to carry on the valuable work 0i helping tne mothers and babies.
