Preliminary discussions which have been proceeding for several months have resulted in the Portuguese Government approving a large-scale Jewish settlement in Angola, Portuguese West Africa, says the “Daily Herald.’’ Prominent British politicians, including Sir John Simon, are interested m the scheme. Portugal is assured that no British objections will be raised. Jews may be drawn from Germany, Poland, Austria and Rumania. It is possible that five million Jews now living in hardship and uncertainty will, finally be affected. American organisations for the relief 0f... Jewish distress are prepared to advance . £2,000,C00 towards the scheme. The sponsors hope it will even be possible to establish an autonomous Jewish State under the League of Nations, though the Portuguese Government at present is unwilling to accept the League’s overlordship. It expects settlers to accept Portuguese citizenship.
