The Attorney-General (Mr Cummings) to-night announced proceedings against tne former secretary of the Treasury and Ambassador to Britain, Andrew Mellon, former Mayor Walker of New York, Thomas Lamont, a partner in the J. P. Morgan Company, and Thomas Sidle, a noted Cleveland layer and a partner of the former Secretary of War, Mr Baker, for alleged tax evasion. Mr Cummings said the cases would soon ho presented to the grand juries. . The newly-created tax division of the Department •of Justice also, announced that other cases of a similar nature were pending against other individuals. The case against Andrew Mellon, it is understood, has been under investigation for some time. "William Duffy was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for income tax evasion. He returned from supervision of the Carnera-Loughran boxing bout just in time to he sentenced.
