BIG GALA DAY

SPECTACULAR CARNIVAL EFFORT.

ATTRACTIONS AT KING EDWARD PARK. The promotion of an outdoor gala, in connection with the Hawera, Carnival now in progress in aid of the distress relief funds, was left to the Hawera Rotary Club and Hawera Women’s Club. These organisations appointed a joint committee for the purpose, and the plans for a spectacular gala at King Edward Park, to take place next, "Wednesday week, March 21, are now complete. The full programme justifies' the committee’s claim that this will be the biggest one-day attraction organised in Hawera. Proceedings are to open at 1 p.m. with a procession through the town, commencing from the Water Tower. This will be headed by the Hawera Municipal Band, followed by the Hawera. Volunteer Fire Brigade, the four queen candidates, the Hawera Pipe Band, a “mystery queen’’ and her retinue, and other features. Next on the programme will be a race from the Water Tower to the Park gates between two contestants whose identities are at present shrouded in mystery. Upon arrival at the Park the winner of this/ great match (for which the side stakes are said to be substantial) will be presented with a trophy by the Mayor. The Mock Court will then bold a sitting, when some well-known citizens, will be arraigned on a formidable list of “charges.’’ On the green in the vicinity of the band rotunda there will be arranged tents for side-shows, stalls, etc. In the centre of the green there will be presented displays of massed drill, gymnastics, tugs-of-war for the South Taranaki Primary Schools’ championship, folk dancing, etc. A tennis tournament, open to all-comers, will bo in progress on the Park dub’s lawns, and putting and croquet competitions will be held on the Park Croquet Club’s l lawns. ' 0 A fine collection of side-shows has been organised, including the everpopular, but now rave. Punch and Judy Show, hoop-la, hitting-tlie-hus-bancl competition (for which large entries are anticipated), nail-driv.ing and hat-trimming competitions, and best dressed doll (school girls), in addition to all sorts of refreshment stalls. Granted fine weather, the committee anticipates one of the largest assemblies of the public that has been held on the park and promise a full day’s enjoyment, to everybody who attends in tiie carnival spirit, ready to join in the fun and assist in making the effort the success its worthy object deserves.
