HAWERA QUEEN CARNIVAL

PROGRESS RESULTS

Public interest in the Hawera district'Queen Carnival is now becoming manifest and the activities of the various committees have become so intense that the general committee has found it necessary to allocate various nights for certain entertainments in order to avoid clashing. Results at noon to-day show a complete reversal of position as regards the Business candidate, as well as a determined effort by the Country candidate to reach the top. Progress results:

The voting thus far is exceedingly / close and on present indications one would hesitate to forecast the final result. The total amount represented bv the above votes is £3lB 17s 9d and with ten days to no it would appealcertain that the general committee’s expectation for the Queen Carnival effort alone will be justified. “MYSTERY BAZAAR.” PREPARATIONS. Interest has been steadily growing during the past few weeks in connection with the campaign to raise money for the unemployment relief.* The final effort in this connection takes the form of a bazaar which opens in the Winter- Show Buildings, at Hawora, on the night of March 21. in this issue will be found an advertisement setting out the main points. This is an effort to raise funds for a specific purpose and in connection with it patrons will get full value for their money invested. There is to be a general work stall conducted by the joint churches, and there is a large jumble stall under the control of the Mayoress. For this latter stall the public are asked to send any article that is saleable to the Winter Show office. There are several other stalls, and one of the principal attractions each night will be the tug-of-war. Already there are about twenty teams entered. There will be a number of pulls each night and the final will be on the Saturday night. This in itself will be an immense attraction. Besides this there will be dancing, a Maori entertainment and many other attractions each night to kpep the public interested.

It has been decided to issue season tickets in connection with the bazaar, and these are available at the office of the Winter Show buildings. Adults 2s 6d and children Is 3d. PLAINS AND FANCY DRESS Another special Movie dance will be held at the Winter Show Buildings on Monday night. Prizes will be given for the best fancy costumes. These Movie dances have been very popular with the publio and only' two more are to be held. Wills’ Melodymakers Orchestra will supply the music and an excellent supper will be provided. SPORTS CANDIDATE. SNOOKER TOURNEY CONCLUDED. The final of the snooker tournament conducted by Mr. Clarrie Duggan in aid of the 'Sports Queen was played last evening between M Pine and W. O’Brien, the latter winning by a black after a very keen contest. Flirtin' results were as follow :—First round: J. Campbell beat B. Sargeson, R. Hooper beat L. Stewart, E. Kurta beat *E. Hannan. Second round: M. Pine beat J. Whyte, J. Campbell beat H. Spurdle, E. Kurta beat R. Hooper, S Grubi beat W. Canning, W. O’Brien beat P. Little. Third round: C. Conway beat D. Goodwin, P. Pine beat 9. Gorman, AV. O’Brien beat S. Grubi, E. Kurta beat J. Campbell. Semi-final.—All Pine beat C. Conway, W O’Brien beat E. Kurta. Pinal.—W. O’Brien beat M. Pine.

The biggest break was recorded by M. Pine, who made 25 in the semifinal, eclipsing J'. Whyte’s 23 made in the first round. Other good breaks were ■ D. Goodwin and E. Kurta 22. O. Ehrhorn 21, and E. Tippett 20.

COUNTRY CANDIDATE

CONCERT AT OKAIAWA. The Okaiawa hall was filled on Wednesday evening when a concert organised by Misses V. Mortimer and Audrey Betts was given in aid of the Country Queen by artists from the Hawera and Okaiawa districts. Every item proved popular. The programme was as follows: Piano duet, “Invitation to the dance,” Misses V. Mortimer and Audrey Betts; songs, “Valley of Laughter,” “Sing, Joyous Bird” and “Pale Moon,” Miss E. Murdoch; recitations, “See what I Missed,” “Tommy,” “The Burglar,” and “Wives that said so,” Miss M. Instone; vocal duet, “Pokarekare,’ Ani Thomson and Huia Pulcetapu; songs, “Veteran’s Song” and “Drake Goes West,” Mr. G. Cotterill; comedy items, “Two Black Imps,” Messrs J. Smillie and Cyril Betts; vocal duets, “Water Lilies” and “Gipsy Chorus,” Pauline and Christine McEwen; conjuring display, Mr. E. K. Cameron; songs, “Macushla” and “I’ll Sing Thee Songs of Araby,” Mr. R. Maunder; poi dances, by Maori girls; songs, “This Beautiful Land of Nod” and “Before the Sun Awakes,” Pauline McEwen; violin solos, “Spanish Dance” and “Souvenir,” Mr. R Maunder. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Anderson (Hawera) and Mrs. McEwen. At the conclusion Mr. ,T. F. Kilevj apologised for the absence of Miss Rodgers and thanked the performers for their interesting programme and for their practical help to the Country candidate's cause. Mr. E. K. Cameron briefly acknowledged the kindly remarks and assured the committee they were very glad to help. Afterwards a dance was held, when music was supplied by Mrs. E. .1. Betts, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Maunder and Mrs. J. Green. Supper was served by the ladies. A committee of Te Roti people have arranged a euchre party and dance in the hall for Monday next, the proceeds to he in aid of the Country Queen. All arrangements will be of the best and an enjoyable evening is assured.

AFTER-CHUROH CONCERT. A further of the series of afterchurch concerts will be held to-morrow (Sunday) evening at the Hawera Opera House, commencing at 8.30 o’clock, when the Hawera public will have the opportunity of hearing the AVanganui Garrison Band, which is making tlu trip to Hawera specially to provide an entertainnment in aid of the Queen Carnival funds. The band will be supported by a Wanganui concert party and patrons can look forward to a particularly good entertainment. An endeavour is being made to secure the appearance* of Mr 15. \A . Hadelow, oi Patea, to play pipe selections in conjunction with the* band, a jiorlovmance which will be attempted for the first time in Taranaki.
