In one of the fiercest bush fires e-x / perieneed m the Blackwood and 'Eclair districts, the home of a well-known ornithologist and naturalist, Mr Edwin Ashby, was destroyed. Mr Ashby’s invalid wife was rescued from the burning house. Hundreds of acres of orchards and good country have been l devastated. Five hundred men were fighting the flames when a change of wind saved the whole countryside from being swept.
