MINISTER REFUTES RUMOUR. REPORT REGARDING TARIFFS. (Bv l-i-ffioh —Prep*. Asa-.x-latlon ' WELLINGTON, March 9. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates comments on a statement in the. Press in which it is asserted that under the Ottawa Agreement New Zealand ‘ ‘agreed to remove all revenue tariffs from her schedule.” “Because of the publicity which the statement has received,” states (Mr Coates, “it cannot be allowed to pass without notice. It has no foundation in fact, and I doubt whether any competent authority -in any country could be found to endorse i-t. It is true that it would mean that all duties would 1 have to be removed from' goods of a kind that are not actually being manufactured in New Zealand. This,, of course, would play havoc -with our public revenue, and it was not and could not have been suggested by the British Government at any stage of tho discussions.”
