Giving a verdict against the British Board of Boxing Control in favour of Jack Doyle, the -boxer, ordering the payment of the -stake to him, Mr Justice McKinnon commented that the* pecuniary rewards- for boxing were almost beyond the dreams of avarice. In this case the winner received a. sum much greater than the year’s salary of the Lord Chief Justice of Appeal. On July 12, 1933, Doyle, known as the Irish giant, and Jack Petersen, v Welshman, holder of the. British heavyweight championship, fought for the title, and Doyle was disqualified in the second round’for hitting low. Each was to receive £SOOO. and the promotei* of the fight handed Doyle’s share to the Boxing Board of Control, in accordance with its regulations when a boxer is disqualified. On July 19 the Boxing Board of Control suspended the license of Doyle for six months, and decided that Doyle and his mother should each he paid £5 a- week for six months from Doyle’s ’ £3009 purse, the balance to he forfeited. i
