They had Been engaged for a few year's, and the bridegroom had furnished a. cottage, Where he had' lived alone for three years owing to the bride’s parents'’ objection to the match. Several times the couple had arranged a runaway ceremony, but always bad been frustrated by the girl’s mother. However, during the fog, the bride slipped away and left her mother in bed. She jumped on to a bus. to: the next village, accompanied by a: brother and her aunt. The bridegroom, himself a policeman’s son, turned tip with the local constable as witness, and the ceremony was .performed at a register office. The couple then returned to the bridegroom’s cottage.
