GRADE O SCHOOLS

“INJUSTICE” TO TEACHERS. R EQUEST FOR INSPECTIONS. “This seems to me a very unsatisfactory state of affairs and a poor reward for those teachers who have taken these small back-country schools with the hopes of bettering; themselves,” wrote a teacher to the Taranaki Education Board yesterday relating to the noninspection of grade 0 schools. The letter was from a sole teacher in a small King Country school. The teacher asked if the school could be visited by the inspectors on. their next round. “Last year relief teachers in Canterbury.” continued the letter, “received up to eight or more marks and unless the inspectors visit this school T will have no chance of receiving more than four, which I believe is the customary figure in such cases.” It was explained that it had become customary to exclude grade 0 schools from the rounds of inspection. “An injustice may be done to teachers in these small schools,” said the chairman. Mr J. A. Valentine. “These teachers often need help and guidance, but t.hev are now just floundering along on their own.” ~ “An inspection is more necessary for ‘•hese teachers’ than for any others in th" service.” said Dr W. M. Thomson. It was decided to make representations to the department to allow the inspection of grade 0 schools.
