SPORTING

AUSTRALIAN SPRING RACING. NEW ZEALANDERS ENGAGED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) SYDNEY, Sept. 29. The spring racing carnival of the Australian Jockey Club will open tomorrow. There is every prospect that it will be very successful. Many prominent inter-State and New Zealand racing men have already arrived. Showery weather has prevailed for two days, but it is now clearing and mild conditions are returning. The track is unaffected so far.

The trainer J. T. Jamieson states that there is not much chance of the New 'Zealand-bred Limarch running, in the Derby. The colt wrenched a shoe off a forefoot and has been very lame. Whether Limarch will start will be decided definitely in the morning. The colt was rather better to-dav.

Autopay is improving and may start at the end of the meeting.

Jefferd with Bay Tree contemplated returning home by to-day’s boat, but was unable to make shipping arrangements and Bay Tree may start at the meeting. Blixten is in l tine fettle for tomorrow \s Derby and should be suited by the softer track. The same view is held with regard to Inflation in the Epsom, which is expected to be ia great race as many brilliant horses of equal qualifications will be participating. SPECIAL RACE TOR WINOOKA. CURRENT RACING COMMENT. LOSS OF MAN’AWH 15NUA (By “Limited.”) Hawera sportsmen will sympathise with Harry Rama in the loss he has sustained by the death of Manawhen.ua. Manawhenua ran fourth in the Melbourne Cup last November and. w-on in all fourteen races with stakes amounting to £3668. By Acre from ( Country Picnic, Manawhenua was bred by Mr Rama in 1927, and thus was six years old. He had four starts, all unplaced, at two years. In the following season lie scored .seven wins, including the Champion Hack Cup at Te Aroha and the Bukekohe Cup, each LJ miles, and the Members’ Handicap at Ellerslie and the Onslow Handicap at Trentham, each six furlongs. His winnings . tha t .season totalled £1495. At four years Manawhenua won three races and 850 in stakes. The Flying Stakes at Avondale and the Members’ Handicap and York Handicap at Ellerslie were the races in which he was successful. Prior to competing in the Melbourne Cup a. year ago Manawhenua raced consistently in Sydney. He won two races, the September Handicap' (1 mile 3 furlongs) at. Canterbury Park and tlie Spring Handicap (1£ miles) atRand wick. On tlie day be won the. ! latter race lie had earlier run third in the Tramway Handicap. (7 furlongs). He ran second in the Sydney Handicap (I.V miles) and in the Waverley Handicap (1$ miles) was. beaten by a. head hv Historic. His earnings in Australia were £693. Resuming racing in New Zealand in March, Mana- , whemia, added £630 to his account. He ran .second to Golden Wings in the Easter” Handicap at Ellerslie and closed his career with victories in two races the distances of which afforded typical instances of his ability to both sprint and .stay—the Members’ Handicap (7 furlongs) at Trentham and the July Handicap (11 miles) at Ellers-

Few horses at Hllerslie are doing better than King March, who is getting through a. .solid preparation in view of his engagements at the Avondale meeting next month. This horse has not won a race for some considerable time, but his second to Speedmint in the Jellieoe Handicap last month was a useful perforniance, and

he may do better now that the going is getting firmer. The fact that'King March is always running on at the end of his .races is a. bit in his favour, and he will he well suited hv the long straight at Avondale. * * * * *

Since racing at the Pakuranga meeting, where he recorded an easy win in the Dunedin Handicap, Tradesman has trained on .satisfactorily at Te Papa and is reported to he in first-rate condition. He is due to- make his next appearance in the Flying Stakes at Avondale/ and can be depended on to .run a. .solid race. He was third in that event twelve months ago and won tlie President’s Handicap on the .second day at the-same meeting. Tradesman has won the last three races that he has contested and is sure to get plenty of support the next time he goes to. the post. •* •* ' * * *
