HAWERA PLUNKET SOCIETY

“COMING-OF-AGE” BALL OVER. 200 GUESTS ATTEND Between 200 and 300 guests assembled at the Winter Show Buildings in Hawera last evening for the Hawera Plunket Society’s 21st anniversary ball. Nio effort was spared to make the function an outstanding success soci T ally, and the festive ail* which paraded the whole evening’s proceedings made it all the more enjoyable for patrons who attended from a® far afield as New Plymouth and Pa-tea and from centres outside the province. In the matter of decorations the society had the very valuable assistance of the members of the Hawera Rotary Club at the direc- j tion of Rotafiaii W. S. Gibsori, Mr F'. j Pettitt and the South Taranaki Elec-, trio Power Board. Many hours were | ■spent in Lloyd George Hall, which Was ! transformed into a- bowery of greenery intermingled with cherry “blossom,” j and fitted with alcoves softly illuminated with coloured lights. At the main entrance patrons were welcomed by “Miss lPftunket” —h doll “’baby” dressed appropriately and given pride of place in a cleverly-designed “play- I house.” A walk arched over noth bamboo and hung with coloured lights gave access to a carpeted and com- | fortably furnished lounge where clavefc j cup was served during the evening at j a buffet superintended by Messrs Royistou, McC’oll and N. Struthers. Adjoining the lounge were the cloak rooms with attendants in charge and upstairs the ballroom was decorated in a simple but most effective manner. ‘ “Baby” blue and “baby” pink crinkled streamers formed a canopy overhead, and at intervals were hung large baskets of asparagus fern. A dais with a border of pot plants along the outer edge was provided for Wills’ Melodymakers Orchestra, which rendered an excellent programme of dance music. Mr R,. P. Morrissey was in charge of the floor as master of ceremonies and the proceedings went with a merry swing from beginning to end 1 of ft lengthy programme of old-time and modern dances.

Prior to the interval for supper two bearers entered t'he ballroom carrying between them a large handsomelydecorated three-tier birthday cake which was deposited on a table in front of the dais. Mrs A,. M. Winks (president of the society) addressed the gathering and welcomed the guests, at the same time introducing the Mayor of Hawera (Mr J. E. Campbell), who was accompanied by Mrs Campbell. Mrs Winks was attired in a smart gown of brown and biege lace and Mrs Campbell wore midnight blue ring velvet. Mrs Winks was supported by Miss J. McColl (Plunket nurse), who was gowned in black lace and wore a black and white satin capelet. Mr Campbell aoKnowledged the welcome and on behalf of the residents ot Hawera conveyed to the society heartiest congratulations on the attainment of its 21st anniversary. He referred briefly to the very important part which the Plunket Society played in the life of the community and to the record of service of the committees which had carried it on so successfully from year to year. There could be no more welcome visitor in the' homes where children were concerned than the Plunket nurse, said Mr Campbell, and he paid tribute to the sympathy and ready understanding of Nurse McColl. A number of apologies for their inability to attend the function were re ceived, including one fi'jpm Sir Truby King (founder of the society) and others from Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P. (member of the Hawera branch advisory board) and from-the New Plymouth and Patea branches.

At this stage of the proceedings the Mayor called upon Mrs Winks to cut the society’s birthday cake and also to accept from the members of the committee a golden key suitably inscribed mittee a golden key suitobly inscribed as a memento of the occasion.

* The cake was cut amidst applause and the guests rose and sang “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” Supper was served in the downstairs hall, the tables being beautifully decorated with vases of spring flowers in shades of pink and red placed on central runners of pale green fluted i paper. The flowers -were donated by I the wives of Rotarians and arranged most artistically by a committee consisting of Mesdames W. G. Strange
