LOAN AND MERCANTILE

The report of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited states that prices for all classes of fat sheep remain as per last week. Fat ewes are now being culled out of the flocks, and generally are in prime condition. Wethers are practically unprocurable, and fat hoggets are also scarce. No spring lamb has appeared on the market yet, but with the favourable season being experienced we can look for some very shortly. Fat cattle are selling at least week’s rates, but butchers are only buying from hand to mouth, and competition is not very keen. Stocks held in Taranaki are not large and we look to prices remaining steady. For store sheep the demand in every section is very keen, but very few quotes are available. Ewes and lambs are sought after, and several lines have been sold at what must be satisfactory figures. Store wethers are urgently wanted, but are evidently not in the district. A very keen demand still exists for store cattle and prices for these are very firm; in fact, the margin between stores and fats is too small at present. A good demand is evident for good weaner heifers, but there are not a great number of these left in the dis-' trict. A very good local inquiry is evident for really good in-calf heifers, 1 but medium and inferior sorts are hard' to quit. Yardings are still good and in most cases vendors are meeting the market. A good demand lor good' young dairy cows, but aged and med- 1 jum sorts are also hard to sell, and vendors have to be content with very' moderate prices. j Good yardings of pigs still come forward and prices, if anything, are bet-' ter than those ruling last week. j Horses are still in demand, but the main rush is over. | Private sales during the week have been: Yearling heifers £3 10s to £4,1 fat wethers 20s to 23s id, springing cows £5 10s to £6 15s, fat ewes in wool 18s to 20s, fat shorn ewes 15s I to 16s, ewes and lambs 18s to 275.
