VARNISH ABLAZE IN ROOM

Frederick Howard of King’s Crescent, Lower Hutt, was badly burned about the" face and body last evening. A bottle of varnish had been placed' on the mantlepiece well away from the fire. Mr. Howard and his wife were sitting in front of the stove when the bottle cracked and the contents made contact with the stove. Mrs. Howard had heard the crack Mid managed to escape, hut her husband was enveloped in flames. His clothes, saturated with the varnish, blazed fiercely. In an endeavour to prevent the spread of the fire he rushed outside, but this only made matters worse fop himself. Miss Howard! and a young man, however, saved him. Mrs Howard ran out to alarm the fire brigade and just managed to do so before fainting at the alarm .box. She was found there by the brigade when it dashed up. Meanwhile the fire had' been put out. A doctor was called and sent Mr. Howard to the hospital in the free ambulance.
