CRUELTY CONDEMNED
MAGISTRATE’S STERN COMMENT. CATTLE "WITHOUT FODDER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 27. Describing the details as nauseating, Mr. E. C. Lovvy, S.M., delivered a scathing condemnation of the action of two men who were charged in the Police Court this morning with cruelty to animals “The Court becomes hardened,’’ the magistrate said, “but this case is sickening.” William David Keillor (Isla- Bank) pleaded guilty to three charges of failing to supply cattle with proper and sufficient food. Similarly charged, George Aitken, who was in charge of the cattle, pleaded not guilty. It was stated that three animals had been found dead. Aitken said lie. liad done his utmost to save the cattle. He had written to the inspector of stock at Invercargill to see about feed. The magistrate: And in the meantime the cattle were dying. Aitken reiterated that he had done everything he could. He could not accept' an offer of a neighbour as the cattle were not his. The magistrate: It would serve you right if I sentenced you to a term of imprisonment to show you that animals have feelings as well as you and must be attended to. Both men were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called* upon.
