“THE WHITE SISTER.” “ The White Sister,” Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer’s new talking picture version of F. Marion Crawford’s romance, will open at the Hawera Opera House to-night for a season of three nights and one matinee (to-morrow). Helen Haves and Clark Gable are co-starred for the first time on the screen in this film and a prominent supporting cast features Lewis Stone, Louise Closser Hale, May Robson, Edward Arnold and Alan Edwards. Miss Hayes plays the role of an aristocratic Italian girl who turns down the suitor of hei father’s choice in favour of a young officer in the Italian air force. When notified of his death at the front, ■she enters a convent. The story rises to a sensational climax when the lover returns and finds the. girl’s .religious vows an obstacle to his happiness. At the matinee to-morrow Buck Jones in “South of the Rio Grande will be presented in conjunction with “The White Sister.” .Seats may be reserved at Miss Blake’s. Jones an his most daring and thrilling mood. He goes through his' role with reckless abandon, performing whirlwind adventures with an ease of wliioh only he is capable. The story, unfolded in old Mexico is exciting as well as colourful. When Buck, as Carlos, a member of the Mexico police learns that his friend, Ramon Ruiz is in love with the same girl that was responsible for the death of his younger brother, he is determined to frustrate any further mischief on her part. . He also discovers that she is working for a gang of crooks who are seeking to gain control of the Ruiz property to develop it for oil. How" ho foils these plans provides intensely exciting drama. Mona. Maris gives an intresting. portrayal as the colourful and spirited dancing girl. The second feature to. be presented will be “Gold Dust Gertie,” starring Winnie Lightner who will be remembered for her work in “'Gold Diggers of Broadway” and “Life of the Partv.” “Gold Dust Gertie” is said to top all Miss Lightner’s previous successes.
