BAND SUBSIDY

(To the Editor.) Sir, —It is very evident by his letter that “Beethoven” is neither a ratepayer nor a free lance. If he was a ratepayer he would at dice haa e answered niy challenge and if a free lance he would not lie down and allow another to walk over him. Be the 1932 contest, he says I am in ignorance of “certain alterations on the judge’s award sheet,” but nevertheless if this is really a fact it apparently did not give the Hawera Band any further advantage in placing. Iheu* non-appearance this year is certainly beyond my comprehension. As regards his question about who repairs instruments in Hawera, Mr Editor, I know you won’t agree to give any firm a tree advertisement in a letter, but if the Band Committee are prepared to take the head of their bass drum and hand it to the Mayor the expert I spoke of will put on it a first-class skin and, if the job is not as good, at as good a. price, as was clone in Wellniigton they will get the skin for nothiiio;. i nuite. agree that it is no -part of my business to know what Mr box eains, but it is every ratepayer’s business to see that the v get value for their money spoilt by the council. Again, what ri.crht has “Beethoven” got to invite me into the band’s or any other society’s practice room to prove.. as he savs. ‘what T can’t- do? Now, sir you will notice that my friend lias dodged the* issue in all mv Questions and contents himself with dragging herrings across the trail, but if it were possible and I did accent his challenge to conduct any of the three societies he mentions. lie would, if a player, and not only interested from a monetary point of view, probably have to do the hardest night’s practice he lias done for some time, and bluff would not get him anywhere. Also, I would like to sav that I have no need to “get to-o-ether” with Haydn or anyone else to answer my friendly (?) adversary, and would inform him that mv strong point is not platform debate, but minding mV own business. —T am. etc..
